5 Irrational Thoughts and Fears After a Job Interview

5 Irrational Thoughts and Fears After a Job Interview 5 Irrational Thoughts and Fears After a Job Interview Knowing what to do and what not to do after a job interview can be just as important as the job interview itself. In a recent blog about thoughts and fears before a job interview, I covered my experiences with a job interview and how I mentally took myself out of the running before the interview even started. I had attended more than two dozen job interviews in my native New York City. This blog describes what happened after the job interview written about previously, which will take you through the thoughts and irrational fears that hurt my chances of getting work in the following months. I stress again that times change for everyone, and at some point, we all have to be prepared for job interviews. It is mandatory to get over these irrational thoughts and fears after a job interview to have future interviews with confidence. 5. “I bombed the interview. I am going to follow up quickly and apologize” I decided this 10 minutes after the interview, spoke to my wife about what happened, and she explained to me why I should not do it. Thankfully, I listened. Instead, I followed up with a thank you note for their time and left it alone. Here is why. After Interview Tip: You should never apologize for a bad job interview, especially if you fear like you completely bombed it. You simply do not know how the hiring manager feels. You only have an assumption as to why. If you know for a fact that you did not have a great interview because they told you, the last thing you should do is leave a lasting memory of the bad interview by apologizing. Let it go and move on. Do not draw attention to yourself over negative interviews that should be forgotten. 4. “I am not doing enough obviously. I need to start applying online for jobs mostly” Reflecting, to this point I believe I had done a bit too much. At the time, however, I was not working and thought that the best course of action would be to play the numbers of applying online. I made the smart decision to go home and work on several different resumes, one for each particular skillset. Then I made the unwise decision to completely spam job listings all over the Internet for jobs I can “almost do”. After this job interview, my fear was, “Everyone else must be doing more than I am because they have jobs and I do not.” The real problem was that I stopped networking, which was something I had done a great deal of for most of my career. Mentally, whether I knew it or not, I had given up because of my irrational fears and thoughts following the job interview. I focused only on applying for jobs online, a big mistake. After Interview Tip: The verdict will forever be out on whether or not applying online for jobs “works”. Some have had success, but most do not. Finding a job is not the one-pronged approach it used to be. The only way to “get a job” from a person is by networking with people. Online job applications are an effort, but they are not everything. 3. “I will take any job at this point” I meant well, but it was a bad idea. After months of little success with interviews from job listings I spammed, I found myself growing more and more discouraged. In many ways, I had practically made a fool of myself at some job interviews just by showing up. One interview at a fashion design website loved talking to meand thought it was “brave to show up”, but I knew nothing about the industry or the culture. I interviewed because I usually pick out my wife’s clothes for work and people say she looks amazing. Regardless, looking back I would have hated the job even I could learn how to survive in it. After Interview Tip: No matter what happens to you in your career, stick to the things you are most passionate about. A paycheck is great, but we are in an economy right now that survives on dedication to a passion, not a paycheck. You will also be able to sleep better at night. Working jobs you do not like clutter up your resume with things you wish you had not done, not a great thing to have for a job interview. 2. “I do not need help talking to people in job interviews” This irrational thought hit me because I was preparing for every other thing in the world, other than the thing I should be working on: “How to interview for a job” Only someone who over thinks will miss the most obvious obstacle and I was doing just that. My “interview muscles” were out of shape. I was likable, yes, but I was expecting that to be everything. I was not talking business enough, and most importantly, the business of the people in the job interview. I only discovered this after a hiring manager, in Denmark of all places, told me. He simply said, “Do all Americans talk as much as you? Is that something we will have to get used to?”. He was not insulting me. He was planning on opening a business in the USA. After Interview Tip: Everyone can always use the practice. If you would like to know what to say in job interviews, or what not to say, check out some of our videos here from career coaches. 1. “I do not have time to take classes or volunteer” This was a big mistake on my part for the better part of a year. After Interview Tip: Life rarely works in reverse. My mindset was to “get hired” and then “do what I need to do to further my career education”. Unfortunately, in today’s business world the longer you stay out of work the harder it is to get hired. This makes it mandatory for everyone to keep their brains and lives active by doing some sort of work. Take business courses on things you care most about and volunteer with people who work in your field. In conclusion Eventually, after a year of irrational thoughts and fears, followed by a year of taking positive action all came full circle and I was hired, only after I became honest with myself, put in the work to prepare for job interviews, and stopped wasting time in areas that were not helping. The saying goes, “If you spend time digging ditches in a rainstorm, all you are doing is creating a mud puddle.”

ASME Student Members Complete WISE Policy Summer Internships in Washington, D.C.

ASME Student Members Complete WISE Policy Summer Internships in Washington, D.C. ASME Student Members Complete WISE Policy Summer Internships in Washington, D.C. ASME Student Members Complete WISE Policy Summer Internships in Washington, D.C. Aug. 19, 2016 (Left to right) ASME WISE intern Brenna Doherty, ASME Government Relations Manager Melissa Carl, and WISE intern Emily Sheffield pose in front of the Capitol Building on the final day of this summer’s internship program. ASME student members Brenna Doherty and Emily Sheffield recently served as ASME’s 2016 Washington Internships for Students of Engineering (WISE) interns. Ranked in the past as one of the best internships in the U.S. by the Princeton Review, WISE offered a unique opportunity to third- and fourth-year engineering students to spend the summer of 2016 in Washington, D.C., learning about the interaction of technology and public policy. Doherty and Sheffield were among 12 interns from seven engineering professional societies who served in this years summer internship program, which took place from June 6 to Aug. 5. Selected from a nationwide competition, Doherty, Sheffield and the other interns spent nine weeks learning how government officials make decisions on complex technological issues and how engineers can contribute to legislative and regulatory public policy decisions. At the end of the nine weeks, the interns produced a public policy paper on a topic of interest to them and ASME, and then presented their findings on Capitol Hill. Brenna Doherty Brenna Dohertys policy topic was related to planetary defense, specifically focusing on tracking, deflecting, and destroying near earth objects (NEOs). To mitigate NEOs, she recommended: increasing space-based tracking capabilities; testing kinetic impactor technology; analyzing nuclear device technology; increasing interagency roles; and developing an emergency manual. She attends the University of Wyoming where she majors in mechanical engineering and minors in computer science. After graduating in December of 2017, Doherty plans to work in the aerospace and defense industry. Emily Sheffield served as the joint ASME/Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office WISE intern. Sheffields research paper dealt with how to improve the publics perception of manufacturing. Her specific focus was on K-12 aged students and how they should be more greatly encouraged to pursue career and technical education (CTE). Her papers recommendations included that the National Academy of Engineering produce a report reviewing the present scope and impact of K-12 manufacturing-related education efforts and its effects on the manufacturing image and workforce skills gap. Sheffield is currently a student at Harding University where she studies both mechanical engineering and pre-law. After graduating in 2018, Sheffield plans to attend law school to study intellectual property law. Incubators Key to Success for High-Tech Startups (1)

Incubators Key to Success for High-Tech Startups (1) Incubators Key to Success for High-Tech Startups (1) OK, youve got the idea, the technology, and some capitalnow what? Chances are, if youre like many scientists and engineers, you know your technology but are less skilled when it comes to starting a business, writing a business plan, and getting financing. These all require different skill sets that dont necessarily come easily to science types. So whats the best way to get your high-tech startup off the ground? Join a business incubator. Business incubators are collaborative programs (often public-private partnerships) designed to help startups find affordable office space (up to 50% below normal market rates), suitable laboratory space, administrative services, IT and telecom capabilities, networking opportunities, and mentors who know business planning. Finding investors is often a huge priority for startups, and knowing what investors expect in presentations and having company leaders who can deliver on those expectations are essential for success. Sharing Environment Despite these key benefits, perhaps the most vital role of an incubator is placing the start-up in a sharing environment with its own kind, where it can easily connect with other companies, mentors, and incubator leaders. Interacting with others about their projects and challenges helps startups stay actively engaged outside their own narrowly defined interests, essentially keeping burnout at bay and even motivating them when they hear about the successes (or failures) of other companies in the incubator. Business incubators are often set up as nonprofit entities that receive funding from government, academic institutions, civic groups, and organizations interested in economic growth and cluster development, all of which can become vital allies to startups in their efforts to gain financing and commercialize their products. Incubators vary greatly in size and type. Some focus strictly on providing the operational space and the specific tools a company needs; others only accept companies that fit a specific industry or market, nurturing a micro-cluster environment where like-minded scientific synergies can develop. Other incubators focus on mentorship and training opportunities, networking, and access to qualified investors. William Jones is director of Venture Creations, a high-tech startup at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), Rochester, NY. Since we focus on technologies in which RIT has core competencies, we can provide faculty, grad students, and labs that can assist these startups with technical development, says Jones. High-technology companies tend to be run by technologists whose networks are limited to other technologists. We are able to connect them with management talent, financing, and customers much faster than they could do on their own. How to Get Admission? Gaining admittance to a high-tech business incubator isnt easy. Openings are scarce, waiting lists long, and competition tough. Startups must apply for admission and present a strong case to judgesthis is often the step that shows them just how weak their business and presentation skills are. Although it can be time-consuming and stressful getting into the right incubator, its worth it. A recent study by the National Business Incubation Association (NBIA) revealed that 87% of business incubation companies were successful after they left the incubator. Jones believes the biggest hurdle for startups is project management discipline. We did a study two years ago to define the major barriers faced by our startup companies and the lack of project management discipline was the greatest, says Jones. While the rest of the world operates in real time, much of the university world operates at a much slower pace. Some of this relates to limitations imposed by the academic calendar, but most is due to the nature of its culture. What takes days in the business world can easily take weeks in the university environment. Simply stated, startups coming out of universities have no sense of urgency. Venture Creations past proof of concept criteria is driven by our expectation that companies do not stay in the incubator for more than three years. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. We did a study two years ago to define the major barriers faced by our startup companies and the lack of project management discipline was the greatest.William Jones, director, Venture Creations

Using a Commitment Device for Professional Development

Using a “Commitment Device” for Professional Development Using a “Commitment Device” for Professional Development When it comes to great business books to boost your knowledge, a major cause of this is the challenge of just picking a few. As simple as that seems, it really is hard to sift through the clutter to find the professional development resources that will be worth your time and hold your curiosity enough to make room for them in your busy life. Problem solved: there are organizations that did the heavy lifting to take the guess work out of what will be worth your time. For example, Metro just did a roundup of business books, Strategy + Business has their Best Books of the Year list, and The Conference Board released their Winter 2014 Best Business Book You Read This Year list. Now that the problem of starting is solved, you need to consider the pitfalls of staying the course. If you are ready to “pay yourself” with an investment in your own career growth, you may need a commitment device to stay the course. A commitment device is a mechanism that you install to outsmart your (busy, lazy, and uncommitted) future self in order to hold onto the conviction that your current self values. According to Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt, it is “a means with which to lock yourself into a course of action that you might not otherwise choose but that produces a desired result.” For example, when Cortez gave the order to “burn the ships,” there was no greater commitment to stay the course in the expedition. If you want the benefits of professional advancement, but don’t necessarily trust that your busy life will give you the space to put the time in, here are three steps to help you double down: Step #1: Review the lists and pick four books. Not books that you think others would be impressed with, but titles that interest you. Buy them all at the same time you pick themâ€"not tomorrow or next weekâ€" right now. Buy two copies of each book. Step #2: Select the first book you will read (i.e. read one per quarter) and give the additional copy to someone you work with. Whether up, down, or across from you on the organization chart; this person is your commitment device and they will give you the accountability to stay on track. (“Hey, this year I’m reading a bit more and I thought I would invite you to read the book with me. Here’s your free copy; all you need to do is enjoy the book then go for a coffee to discuss the key takeaways with me. The only catch is that I need you to calendar the appointment now and send me a reminder…”) Step #3: Repeat the process for the additional books, always using a different counterpart for the commitment device. This will allow you to strengthen connections with people you already know and make new ones with those you may need to know. This is not your own personal book club. It is your concentrated effort to reflect on your working life, take in the ideas and insights of great writers, and apply the takeaways to your own opportunities. If you already feel yourself squirming out of the deal, think about the brutal facts of today’s hyper-competitive job market. So much of your ability to stand out and get ahead of the change curve is going to come from your effort to follow through on undefined goals like this. Because we are all charting a course to stay relevant at work, it will be those who go beyond the job description and discover ways to boost their learning and performance that will be Future-Proof.

What Do PR Firms Look for in Recent College Graduates

What Do PR Firms Look for in Recent College Graduates What Do PR Firms Look for in Recent College Graduates For many young graduates, public relations represents an exciting career opportunity. It offers the chance to work in a fast-paced and vibrant industry with a selection of incredible clients from around the world. Unfortunately, not every graduate is well-suited to a career in communications. When it comes to sorting through the sea of college graduates  entering the job market this year, PR companies have their work cut out for them. While all PR candidates should have passion, dedication, and a basic knowledge of the communication practices businesses are using today, theyll need a little more to really stand out. Hands-On Experience Makes a Difference Many PR agencies look for graduates with high levels of education in areas like public relations, creative arts, advertising, and journalism, but theres more to  a PR career than the right degree. The right major can take a good candidate a long way, but many agencies prefer individuals who have demonstrated their dedication to PR by getting experience in the field through an apprenticeship or voluntary position. Aside from a general knowledge of the communication landscape, it also helps for PR candidates to have experience pitching ideas. Good writing and presentation skills are also critical in a PR environment. These may seem like obvious requirements, but many firms struggle to find graduates who have spent time honing these skills. Other Valuable Skills a PR Candidate Needs Aside from the ability to communicate well in a team environment, a graduate interested in moving into PR should also be familiar with social media. Social media practices are growing increasingly important to the communications and marketing strategies of companies across industries and around the world. PR companies  also value the ability to speak confidently in public,  tell stories on behalf of a brand, and think critically about projects. Technical competency is also a plus in our digital age. In terms of attitude, PR agents need to be strategic, motivated, and client-centric, and many agencies will be looking for graduates  who can demonstrate such a focused, assertive nature. - Theres no one-size-fits-all guide to being the perfect candidate for a PR job, as different agencies will look for different things. However, it is worth noting that todays candidates need more than just the right qualifications on paper to make a lasting  impression on potential employers. Ronn Torossian is CEO of 5WPR.
